Klaviyo

Connecting Klaviyo lets your referral program feed into your broader email strategy. Bloop pushes who referred, who was referred, how much each referrer has earned, and when each milestone happens — so customers Klaviyo already segments and emails now carry their referral behaviour too. Trigger a thank-you flow the instant a referral converts, build a segment of your top advocates, or stop sending generic "refer a friend" campaigns to people who already refer constantly.

The connection works two ways: a custom event marks each milestone (join, share, success, discount received), and profile properties hold standing facts (is this a referrer, their link, their revenue). Set it up under Integrations → Klaviyo.

Best practice: Build segments from profile properties (e.g. "referrers with 3 or more successful referrals") and trigger flows from events (e.g. a reward thank-you off BLOOP - Successful referral). Mixing them up — timing a flow off a property, or segmenting off a one-off event — is the most common reason a Klaviyo setup feels unreliable.

Connecting Klaviyo

  1. In Klaviyo, create a private API key with permission to read and write profiles and events.

  2. In Bloop, open Integrations → Klaviyo and paste the key.

  3. Enable the integration with the on/off toggle.

Turning the toggle off pauses the integration without removing the key. The event sync requires the Scale plan; on lower plans you can connect and sync your audience, but live custom events are a Scale feature.

Custom events Bloop sends to Klaviyo

When a referral milestone happens, Bloop records a metric (event) on the customer's Klaviyo profile. Trigger flows or build segments from these metrics.

Bloop metric
Fires when
Event properties

BLOOP - Join program

A customer joins your referral program

BLOOP - Referral sharing

A referrer shares with a friend

BLOOP - Referred emails

BLOOP - Successful referral

A referral converts

BLOOP - Successful referee email, BLOOP - Referrer code, BLOOP - Referrer reward type

BLOOP - Referee receives discount

A referee receives their discount

BLOOP - Referee discount code

The reward-type property resolves to DISCOUNT, CREDIT, or CASH, matching how the referrer is rewarded.

Profile properties Bloop writes

Bloop sets referral properties on the Klaviyo profile so you can segment by referral behaviour. Referrer profiles receive the fullest set:

Property
Holds

BLOOP Is referrer

Whether the profile is a referrer

BLOOP Is referee

Whether the profile is a referee

BLOOP Joining date

When they joined the program

BLOOP Joining source

Where they joined from

BLOOP Referral link

The referrer's unique link

BLOOP Referral code

The referrer's referral code

BLOOP Referral revenue

Revenue attributed to their referrals

BLOOP Successful referrals

Count of successful referrals

BLOOP Hub Portal

A permanent link to the referrer's personal referral hub

Referee-only profiles get the identity properties (BLOOP Is referrer = false, BLOOP Is referee = true) and joining date; referrer-specific fields stay empty. The "referee receives discount" event also stores BLOOP Referee discount code on the profile. When a referrer is removed from the program, their link and code properties are blanked so a Klaviyo flow never surfaces a dead link.

The BLOOP Hub Portal property is a link that never expires, unlike the two-hour magic link in Bloop's own emails — so it is safe to drop into a flow email that might send days or weeks after a referral. Add it to a button ({{ person|lookup:'BLOOP Hub Portal'|default:'' }}) to send advocates straight to their rewards, tiers, and share tools.

What to do with this data

Example

BLOOP - Successful referral

Event

Trigger a thank-you / reward flow the moment a referral converts

A 1-email flow that fires instantly and references BLOOP - Referrer reward type to match wording to the reward

BLOOP - Referral sharing

Event

Trigger a "thanks for sharing" nudge, or suppress generic refer-a-friend asks

Wait 30 days, then re-prompt only if they haven't shared again

BLOOP - Join program

Event

Trigger a welcome-to-the-program onboarding flow

"Here's how to get the most from your link"

BLOOP - Referee receives discount

Event

Trigger a redemption reminder to the referee

"Your friend's discount is waiting — here's how to use it"

BLOOP Is referrer

Property

Segment all advocates for a dedicated campaign

Exclude them from a "join our referral program" blast they've already joined

BLOOP Successful referrals

Property

Segment your top referrers for VIP treatment

"Referrers with ≥ 3 successful referrals" → early access, a bigger reward

BLOOP Referral revenue

Property

Segment by revenue an advocate has driven

Identify customers worth a personal thank-you

Three high-value plays:

  • Top-referrer VIP segment. Build a segment where BLOOP Successful referrals ≥ your threshold. Give these customers a richer reward, early access, or a personal thank-you.

  • Reward thank-you flow. Trigger a flow off BLOOP - Successful referral so gratitude lands the instant the referral converts. Reference the reward-type property so copy matches whether they earned a discount, credit, or cash.

  • Stop nagging advocates. Use BLOOP Is referrer to suppress generic "refer a friend" campaigns for existing referrers. Asking someone to join a program they're already active in makes your email feel tone-deaf.

Referrers tend to be your best customers and bring more of the same. Research on roughly 10,000 accounts found referred customers about 18% less likely to churn and more profitable over their lifetime (Schmitt, Skiera & Van den Bulte, Journal of Marketing, 2011) — so a Klaviyo segment of proven referrers is a segment of customers most able to grow your store.

A worked example: a top-referrer VIP flow

The thresholds below are illustrative — choose your own based on your volume.

You want to recognise advocates who actually move the needle, automatically, without watching a dashboard.

  1. Sync first, so the property exists everywhere. Connect Klaviyo and run the audience sync (below), so every existing referrer carries BLOOP Successful referrals and BLOOP Referral revenue, not just customers active after connection.

  2. Build the segment from a property. Create a Klaviyo segment: "BLOOP Successful referrals is greater than or equal to 3." The segment is self-maintaining — as a referrer crosses the threshold, Bloop's real-time property update moves them in automatically.

  3. Decide the reward. Give this segment a one-off bonus — say, double store credit on their next referral — with a subject line that names the behaviour: "You've sent us 3 customers. Let's say thanks properly."

  4. Trigger the moment, not just the membership. Separately, build a flow off the BLOOP - Successful referral event so each new conversion gets an instant thank-you. The segment handles "who is a VIP"; the event handles "a good thing just happened."

  5. Measure and tune. Watch whether VIP-segment customers refer more after recognition. Lower the threshold to widen the circle, or raise it if the bonus is too generous.

Syncing your existing audience

When you connect, sync your existing referrers and referees into Klaviyo as profiles with the properties above. A customer who is both a referrer and a referee is merged into a single profile rather than duplicated.

The sync batches profiles and retries automatically if Klaviyo rate-limits requests, so large audiences sync without dropping records.

Run this sync once, right after connecting. Without it, only customers who hit a milestone after you connected will carry properties — so a segment like "all referrers" will miss your entire existing advocate base.

Checking sync status

After connecting, Bloop reports the total referrals available to sync so you can confirm the integration is reading your data. New events and property updates are sent in real time as milestones happen, so profiles stay current without a manual re-sync.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Segmenting off an event instead of a property. A "successful referral" event captures a moment, not a standing fact. Build your top-referrer segment from the BLOOP Successful referrals property, or it will only contain people who converted in a recent window.

  • Triggering a flow off a property. Properties don't "happen," so a flow waiting on a property never fires reliably. Use the BLOOP - Successful referral event to start a thank-you flow.

  • Skipping the initial audience sync. Without it, your existing referrers carry no properties and your advocate segments will be near-empty for weeks. Sync once on day one.

  • Emailing advocates your "join the program" campaign. Failing to exclude BLOOP Is referrer = true makes your best customers feel unseen. Suppress them from join asks.

  • Expecting live events on a lower plan. Custom events require the Scale plan. On lower plans you can still connect and segment from synced properties, but real-time event-triggered flows won't fire.

  • Mailchimp integration — the equivalent integration for Mailchimp audiences.

  • Referral analytics — the in-app view of the same referral performance you're syncing.

  • Referral customers — the referrers and referees that become Klaviyo profiles.
