How to give referrers a bonus reward

A bonus reward is an extra reward a referrer earns alongside the main referrer reward. It has its own type, value and conditions, so you can keep a simple main reward and add a milestone on top: a 10% coupon for every friend, plus $5 store credit on every 3rd friend. Referrers who keep sharing get something to aim for, and you only pay the extra when they deliver.

How to add a bonus reward

  1. Open the referrer reward

    1. In your Shopify admin, open BLOOP Refer & Aff → Referral program, then click your campaign.
    2. Under Rewards, click Referrer reward, then Edit reward.

  2. Add the bonus

    1. Scroll to Bonus reward and click Add bonus reward.
    2. In Reward types, choose Discount coupon, Store credits, Cash, Free product or Custom.
    3. Set the value, the same way as the main reward: Discount value for coupons, store credit and cash, the product for Free product, or a Reward description for Custom.

  3. Choose how often it’s earned

    1. In Minimum requirements, leave None to give the bonus on every successful referral, or choose Minimum quantity of referees and enter a number.
    2. Click Save in the bar at the top of the page.

On a campaign with FlexiTiers, each tier has its own bonus. While an A/B test is running, set the bonus for each variant in the A/B test editor.

What to know before you launch

  • It’s not retroactive. Bloop checks the bonus when a referral is rewarded. Referrals rewarded before you added it don’t get one.
  • It’s taken back with the main reward. When a referred order is cancelled or refunded and the referrer reward is revoked, the bonus from that referral is revoked too. See How to control when a reward is issued and revoked.
  • Removing it keeps what’s issued. Click Remove and save. Bonus rewards referrers already have stay valid.
  • A custom bonus has no minimum. It’s given on every referral, and you fulfil it yourself.
  • The text is automatic. Your custom reward display text applies to the main reward only. The bonus always shows as “+ Bonus: …”.

How it looks on your store

The bonus shows as “+ Bonus: $5 store credit (every 3 referrals)” under the main reward in the referral popup, on the Thank you page, in the customer account and on the Referral Hub. Issued bonus rewards carry a Bonus badge in the referrer’s rewards list.

There’s no separate email. The bonus is added to the referrer’s success email as “Bonus reward: …” with its code, and when a referral earns only the bonus, Bloop sends the success email for the bonus’s type. See How to configure referral email notifications.
